ALL PROCEEDS TO REFUGE UK!

T.W. discussion of sexual assault, misogyny and rape culture.

I wrote this song a decade or so ago, partly, in response to press coverage of a sexual assault where it was argued that the 15 year old victim 'looked older'.

Sadly this type of victim blaming is still a part of our culture.

The murder of Sarah Everard and the racist and misogynistic terrorist attack (lets call it what it was) in Atlanta in recent weeks both led to a resurgence in calls for some much needed changes.

I started working on a new recording of this song in amongst this and then discovered that a friend of mine, Ellie McCartney, with whom I used to record music had also been driven to a creative response to the situation. She had written a powerful spoken word piece putting her experiences into the wider context. It was powerful and thought provoking.

I contacted her to congratulate her on her stunning work and asked if I could add samples of her piece to my song. Thankfully she was up for it and this is the result.

lyrics

Are we so satisfied with being carried through the sky,
That we’ve forgotten to even dream that we can fly?
We tell the story of our kind like a long straight road
Where we’re all heading towards what we are owed

Ignore the ignored caution signs, the endless dead ends
Ignore the seedy alley ways, and all the U-turn bends
Ignore all the bridges that were planned and never made
Ignore how the road was built and the price that was paid

Diverting from the details that tarnish the shine
Of the golden age at the end of the line
But what we must remember of our history to date
Is that his-story is the story of he in place to dictate

Cause here we are and we are not basking in the sun
Not making giant leaps to the moon as one
There are so many who have been left behind
The downtrodden, the vilified and those out of mind

We don’t try to change what is truly wrong
Instead we cast doubt on where the blame belongs
We believe it’s easier to teach a young girl
To fear every danger in the world
Teach her that no one in the world will back her
That she is responsible for the actions of an attacker
If the way she’s dressed makes her look older
The lipstick, short skirt or the bag on her shoulder

Ignore the greater evil of the situation
Objectification of half our population
That her attacker will likely walk free
Ignore all the problems too big for us to see

No, we’d rather teach her to live in fear.
We want life to fit in separate spheres
Boys will be boys
And the boy gets the girl.

Yes, are we so satisfied with being carried through the sky,
That we’ve forgotten to even dream that we can fly?
